Angel Chandelier
From an art historical perspective, the small head in the base is that of an angel or cherub in clouds. Such “angel heads” have been a typical motif in church furnishings since the Baroque and Rococo periods: they mark the celestial sphere and make the object above it—in this case, the chandelier with the angel—seem to rise from a cloud or angelic glory. The head in the base thus emphasizes that the entire chandelier is to be understood as a bearer of divine light and iconographically belongs to the realm of angels and the afterlife.
This chandelier is a celestial object, as is this portal clock, signed “A. Olbrich in Vienna.”
