Biedermeier chest of drawers

Four-drawer Biedermeier chests of drawers made of cherry wood were made around 1820. The Biedermeier style was an art and design movement popular primarily in German-speaking countries during the Biedermeier period (c. 1815-1848).

Biedermeier chests of drawers were very popular at this time and were often made with quality craftsmanship. Cherry wood has been widely used to make furniture because of its warm color and beautiful grain. It is a hardwood and is well suited for furniture making.

This typical four-drawer Biedermeier chest of drawers made of cherry wood from around 1820 has four drawers that are arranged one above the other in a symmetrical arrangement. The drawer fronts have a continuous veneer pattern with no carvings, inlays or other decorative elements. Only the key plates are diamond-shaped inlaid in ebonized pear.

The style of Biedermeier

Biedermeierstyles for chest of drawers is characterized by clear lines, simple shapes and subtle decoration. The furniture should be functional and at the same time aesthetically pleasing. A lot of Biedermeier furniture reflected the bourgeois taste and the desire for living comfort.

Because the pieces of furniture are individually manufactured, there may be differences in the details and design. It is possible that certain furniture manufacturers or regions have specific characteristics and style variations.

Today, original Biedermeier chests of drawers from the 19th century are sought-after collector’s items and can be found in antique shops or at auctions. The price depends on various factors such as the condition of the piece of furniture, the quality of the craftsmanship and the rarity of the design.

Biedermeier chests of drawers are still placed with modern furniture today because they radiate warmth and comfort.

There are two-drawer delicate chests of drawers – so-called pillar chests of drawers. Three-drawer Biedermeier chests of drawers were the most common.

Biedermeier chests of drawers with four drawers are rather rare – they are considerably larger both in height and in width.
