The painting was created during Goethe’s trip to Italy, which lasted from 1786 to 1788 and was of great importance for his literary and artistic development. Tischbein accompanied Goethe on parts of this trip and created several portraits of him, including “Goethe in the Campagna”.
The painting shows Goethe in a relaxed pose, sitting on a stone and gazing into the distance. He wears simple clothing and holds a writing tablet and pen in his hand. In the background, an idyllic landscape with mountains and a lake can be seen.
