Biedermeier casket

A Biedermeier box or casket is a piece of furniture from the Biedermeier era, a period of German art and culture between 1815 and 1848. A box or casket is generally a small container or chest used to store valuables or personal items.

A typical Biedermeier box is made of wood and has a rectangular shape. The surface is sometimes decorated with various materials such as mahogany, walnut or ebony. Fine inlays, carvings or paintings were often added to the surface to enhance the design. Our box is simpler but decorated and is veneered with birch on a softwood body whose interior is blackened.

These boxes were often given as gifts for weddings or other special occasions and were an important part of the bourgeois household in the 19th century. Today, Biedermeier boxes are popular collector’s items and can be purchased at antique shops or online, and can still be used as exceptional gift boxes.
