Robert Mallet-Stevens

Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886-1945) received his diploma in 1910 from the College of Architecture in Paris. After twenty years as a furniture designer and cameraman (for example in L’inhumaine), he began his career as a painter. In the 1920s he was an architect for an exclusively private clientele. He also designed a single fire station in Paris. He was one of the founders of the Union of Modern Artists (UAM) in 1929 with Francis Jourdain, René Herbst and others. The movement strongly opposed the decorativeism of Art Nouveau and proposed a purity of lines and forms that blended with the modern international movement. During the Vichy regime, Robert Mallet-Stevens fled with his family to Penne-d’Agenais (Lot-et-Garonne) in the southeast of France. The importance of his architectural work was only recognized after the death of Robert Mallet-Stevens , when most of his works had already fallen into disrepair (such as Villa Cavrois).
