“Gitane”, 1939

Signed colour lithograph by Louis Icart (1880–1950), dated 1939.

A woman in a richly patterned, dark and gold-toned gown reclines against a shadowed interior. Her turned head, flowing dress and poised gesture give the composition the theatrical elegance associated with Icart’s work. The contrast between her illuminated face and the deep background lends the scene a particularly atmospheric quality.

Dimensions: H 59 × W 69 cm.

Louis Icart and the Art Deco figure

Lithograph by Louis Icart
The colour lithograph “Gitane” by Louis Icart (1880–1950) is an impressive example of the exquisite art of the Art Deco period. Louis Icart, a master of elegance and sensuality in printmaking, created this work in 1939. The lithograph depicts a woman in a green dress, portrayed in Icart’s unmistakable style—a combination of alluring grace and subtle refinement that makes his works so sought after.
The depiction of the woman in “Gitane” captures the spirit and romance of Art Deco. Flowing lines and delicate colours emphasise the green dress and the figure’s graceful pose. Icart, known for his depictions of women who are both elegant and alluring, achieves a balance between attention to detail and artistic freedom in this work. The woman’s green dress draws the eye and forms a harmonious contrast with the softly rendered surroundings.
Created in 1939, this colour lithograph is among Louis Icart’s later works and reflects the maturity of his artistic practice. The lithograph is signed and is also documented in the book “The Complete Etchings”, a comprehensive collection of his works. A reference to “Gitane” appears on page 226, illustration 477, underscoring the work’s significance within his oeuvre.
“Gitane”
“Gitane” is more than a colour lithograph: it is also a piece of art history that preserves the elegance and atmosphere of the late 1930s. Icart’s ability to capture the spirit of his time and reflect it in his work makes this piece a distinctive collector’s item. It represents both the aesthetics of Art Deco and the artistry and creative expression of Louis Icart, one of the best-known printmakers of the period.
With its signature and detailed depiction, this work is a valuable testament to the art of the early twentieth century and remains a desirable object for collectors and admirers of Art Deco.
Another work of art from a different period is the large-format acrylic painting “Ampel”, or this other large-format acrylic painting.
