Art Deco Glass: A Sculptural Approach

During the 1920s and 1930s, French glassmaking explored new relationships between volume, decoration and light. While retaining references to nature, Art Deco often favoured stylised interpretations. Plants, animals and human figures were arranged in rhythmic compositions that emphasised an object’s silhouette.

Decoration became more than a surface embellishment. Modelled in relief, it shaped the perception of volume and gave vases a sculptural presence. Glass emerged as an expressive medium in its own right, bridging functional objects and decorative art.

Lalique, Verlys and Pierre d’Avesn

The pieces by Lalique, Verlys and Pierre d’Avesn in this selection illustrate different expressions of Art Deco glass. Animal motifs, figures and plant forms invite close examination from several angles, revealing the depth of the relief and the treatment of each surface.

René Lalique’s development of press-moulded glass was accompanied by experiments with contrasts between clear and frosted surfaces. Depending on the model, colour, patina and enamel added further decorative effects. These techniques demonstrate a productive relationship between artistic design and manufacturing expertise.

The Art Nouveau vases by Gallé and Daum presented in this category belong to a different aesthetic tradition. They offer an opportunity to compare approaches to French glass without confusing their periods or techniques.

Choosing an Art Deco Vase for Your Collection or Interior

An Art Deco vase can provide a focal point on a console, bookshelf or table. A restrained setting and carefully chosen lighting bring out its contours, relief decoration and subtle variations in colour.

When assessing a piece, consider its model, date, any signature and condition. The quality of the decoration and finishing deserves as much attention as the name of the designer or manufacturer.
