Round centre table

Original Art Deco table, France, circa 1930.

The circular tabletop is veneered in mahogany arranged in a radiating pattern. It is supported by four volute-shaped struts rising from a round, stepped base, also finished with radiating veneer.

Art Deco mahogany centre table

An elegant Art Deco centre table, probably French, circa 1930. The circular top is laid with carefully selected mahogany veneer arranged in a radial, starburst pattern. The changing direction of the grain creates subtle variations in the surface, making the natural figure of the wood an integral part of the design.

The sculptural central support is particularly distinctive. Concave, outward-sweeping elements rise from the round, stepped base towards the projecting tabletop. They give the piece a strong sense of upward movement while preserving the unity of its form.

The design reflects a characteristic approach of French Art Deco: geometry, the expressive qualities of materials and skilled craftsmanship take the place of applied ornament. The dark polished mahogany enhances the depth of the wood and the sculptural effect of the table.

Designed to stand freely in a room, the table is intended to be seen from every side. Its starburst veneering, architecturally modelled central support and balanced silhouette make it a fine example of Art Deco furniture design from the interwar period.
