Art Deco vase with elephant decoration
This expressive French Art Deco vase has a rounded body decorated with a sculptural relief of an elephant among stylised foliage. Broad leaf forms and fine linear patterns frame the animal and bring the decoration into a rhythmic composition around the vessel.
The smoky glass varies in appearance from transparent to softly frosted. As light passes across its surface, the elephant and surrounding foliage become more pronounced. The natural forms are simplified into clear contours, giving the vase a strong sculptural presence.
Elephants and lush vegetation reflect the interest in animal and nature motifs found in French decorative art of the 1920s and 1930s. Here, Pierre d’Avesn brings those motifs together with a carefully structured vessel shape.
