Art Deco desk with an integrated metal lamp

This unusual Art Deco desk dating from around 1930 is distinguished by its elegant curved form and richly figured fine wood veneer. Black lacquered borders frame its semicircular structure and emphasise its architectural lines.

Broad, flat supports alternate with open recesses reminiscent of window bays. Despite its substantial size, the desk therefore has a sense of lightness and openness.

Its most distinctive feature is the permanently integrated chrome-plated Art Deco lamp. A slender, geometrically articulated arm supports a curved metal shade, creating a striking contrast with the warmth of the wood. The combination of curved desk, fine veneer and gleaming metal makes this a rare example of a unified French Art Deco design.

This semicircular desk belongs to a group of ambitious French furniture designs of the early 1930s, in which traditional cabinetmaking met an increasingly functional and architectural approach to interiors. A date of circa 1930–1935 appears plausible in view of its clear geometry, broad areas of veneer and, in particular, its integrated metal lamp with a technical appearance.

In form, the piece is close to the bureau demi-lune. Its semicircular plan departs from the strongly frontal character of a traditional bureau plat and creates a workspace that partially surrounds the user. The desk thus takes on the character of a small piece of working architecture.

This approach relates to the French ensemblier tradition, in which furniture, lighting and interior space were conceived as a whole. This combination of fine veneering and restrained form is characteristic of high-quality French Art Deco furniture.

The metal lamp provides a deliberate contrast. Its elongated shade and mechanically articulated construction reflect the growing fascination with electricity, machinery and modern function.

An attribution to a particular cabinetmaker, decorator or ensemblier cannot currently be supported by documentary evidence. Stylistically, however, the desk can plausibly be placed within the milieu of French ensembliers around 1930.
