Vase by “Etling”

Etling was a French glass manufacturer active during the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s. The company was founded by Edmond Laurent Etling and was headquartered in Paris.

Etling produced a variety of glassware in the Art Deco style, including vases, bowls, lamps, and sculptures. The designs were characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and the use of vivid colors. Some of the most famous designs were created by artists such as Charles Schneider and Jean Sala.

Etling was also known for collaborating with other leading artisans of the Art Deco era, such as designer Maurice Dufrêne. The company also produced a range of advertising items for luxury brands such as Chanel and Lanvin.

Today, Etling glassware is highly sought after by collectors for its beauty and craftsmanship.

Opal glass, also known as milk glass, was often used in the Art Deco era and was a popular material for lampshades, vases, and other decorative objects. The production of opal glass involves adding opacity agents such as zinc oxide or fluoride to the glass during the melting process.

The production of opal glass begins with selecting the right raw materials, such as quartz sand, soda, limestone, and metal oxides, which can vary depending on the desired color and opacity. These raw materials are melted into a glass batch and placed in a melting tank where they are melted at high temperatures.

During the melting process, an opacity compound is added to the glass, which clouds the glass and gives it a milky color. The exact timing and amount of the addition depend on the desired opacity. The glass is then poured or molded and hardened in an oven.

Once the glass is hardened, it can be cut and polished into various shapes to achieve the desired form. Opal glass can be made in different colors by adding metal ions such as copper or cobalt during the melting process.

In the Art Deco style, opal glass was often combined with elegant curved lines and geometric shapes to create decorative lampshades and vases that have a timeless design.
