Floral Still Life by Heinz Tetzner

In this small-format floral still life, Heinz Tetzner presents a vibrant, impasto composition. Against a warm, dark brown background, a few blossoms glow as if emerging from the shadows—rose and coral tones on the left, a delicate yellow blossom highlighted with white in the foreground, and an orange floral motif in the upper right. Broad, visible brushstrokes and boldly applied layers of paint give the leaves and blossoms a three-dimensional quality, lending the subject an immediate, almost sketch-like freshness. The muted surroundings make the color harmonies appear all the more intense, creating a quiet, intimate atmosphere. The black and gold frame emphasizes the concentrated character of this expressive still life.

Heinz Tetzner (1920–2007)

was a German painter and graphic artist from Gersdorf (Saxony) whose work is rooted in the Expressionist tradition.

After an apprenticeship as a pattern designer, he was a guest student at the Königsberg Academy of Art in 1941 (studying under Alfred Partikel, among others). In 1944, he was taken prisoner of war in southern France and from 1946 studied at the College of Architecture and Fine Arts in Weimar.

There, he was particularly influenced by encounters with Pechstein, Heckel, and Schmidt-Rottluff. He was also influenced by the search for the “underlying” aspects of the visible—the psychological dimension in portraiture as well as in landscape painting.

From 1951, he taught in Weimar. From 1954, he worked as a freelance artist in Gersdorf. In 1960, he was appointed lecturer in Schneeberg. Until 1990, he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR.

Late recognition includes, among other things, the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class (1999), and the founding of the Tetzner Museum in Gersdorf (2001).
