The writing furniture has a cylindrical, curved cover for the writing surface. It’s Name derives from this shape, it is called “cylinder bureau” or “rolling bureau”.

This writing flap is opened by rolling it into the furniture. The writing surface can then be pulled out. The writing tablet is edged with dark green leather with gold embossing.e

Above are 3 drawers on the left and right, inlaid with maple threads and fitted with ivory knobs. In the middle, lockable compartment with floral marquetry in dyed maple and a key socket encased in mother-of-pearl.

Biedermeier secretaries

A Biedermeier cylinder secretary is a piece of furniture from the Biedermeier era, which took place around 1815-1848 in Central Europe.

It is a desk equipped with a cylinder top that can be folded down when needed to reveal the writing compartment.

The secretary is characterized by a clear, linear design language and is often made of fine woods such as mahogany or cherry. Also characteristic of the Biedermeier period are the often elaborate decorations of the piece of furniture, for example in the form of inlays or carvings.

Biedermeier cylinder secretaries are a popular piece of furniture in wealthy households in the 19th century and is now a coveted collector’s item.
