Art Nouveau Tray by Gustave Serrurier-Bovy

This Art Nouveau tray, designed by Belgian designer Gustave Serrurier-Bovy between 1902 and 1908, is a remarkable example of the craftsmanship and aesthetic quality of this era. Serrurier-Bovy, one of the most important innovators of decorative arts in Belgium, demonstrates his connection to the English Arts and Crafts Movement with this piece. He also highlights his influence from William Morris. This influence was developed when he stayed in London in 1884.

The rectangular shape with gently rounded long sides gives the piece an elegant silhouette. The smooth surface is framed by an artfully openwork gallery frame. It is accentuated by small squares and vertical stripes. These distinctive decorative elements are not only visually appealing but also testify to the high quality craftsmanship that characterizes Serrurier-Bovy’s work.

The low feet on which the tray stands ensure stability while emphasizing the harmonious lines of the design. The slightly slanted, rounded handles are also decorated with decorative motifs, stylishly rounding off the entire ensemble.

Overall, the tray is in very good condition, making it a valuable collector’s item. It is not only a functional object but also a work of art, embodies the ideals of Art Nouveau. It bears the signature of one of the most influential designers of its time.

Another work of art from this period is this Liqueur or whiskey set with tray.
