Original Louis Vuitton hat trunk
manufactured in Paris between 1895 and 1898; printed canvas. Louis Vuitton “Malle Chapeau” (hat trunk), Paris, circa 1895, Damier canvas. “Ladies, your hats are as precious as jewels. Protect them while traveling by placing them in this special hat trunk.” This was the slogan used in Vuitton advertisements at the time, as even the simplest hat cost a fortune. The ladies’ hat trunk offered additional storage space and was crafted from Damier canvas. These elegant trunks were available in eight sizes and various quality grades, accommodating up to sixteen large hats and four small ones. Damier canvas was invented in 1888, a year before the Eiffel Tower. In the early 20th century, with the advent of impregnated canvas, this design—originally created in fabric—retained the trompe-l’œil effect of a woven mat.
