Art Deco Coffee Table Signed by “De Coene”

Signed, three-tiered cocktail or coffee table from the “De Coene” workshop in Belgium, circa 1930. The sculpturally designed table consists of three concentrically arranged, circular levels. These are connected by vertical supports and a central cylindrical body. The large tabletops and the closed base are covered with finely figured walnut veneer in a fan-shaped, mirrored pattern. This decoratively accentuates the lively grain of the wood.

The high, even stippled or piano lacquer finish (synthetic resin lacquer) creates a deep gloss. This is characteristic of Belgian Art Deco production and further emphasizes the radial arrangement of the veneer patterns. The staggered circular sections and the eccentrically positioned upper section reference the formal vocabulary of the international Streamline style of the 1930s. This gives the piece a dynamic, almost architectural silhouette.

The fully enclosed, cylindrical body offers storage space and features flush-mounted doors. The design, however, remains deliberately understated, allowing the clear geometry of the volumes to take center stage. Sign by “De Coene” documents its origin in a quality-conscious Belgian workshop specializing in elegant furniture for sophisticated urban interiors. This piece is a typical example of the transition from decorative Art Deco to functionalist post-war modernism. It is equally suitable as a striking coffee table in the living room or as a sculptural centerpiece in a modern living space.

Another coffee table you should consider is this large, round Art Deco coffee table.
