Rare Art Deco high chest of drawers

The form of this tall chest of drawers is largely defined by its striking flanking sides, which frame the body like architectural cheeks and lend it an exceptionally distinctive presence. This lateral construction clearly defines the central section with its drawers and creates an effective articulation of the front. At the same time, it emphasizes the upward, slender proportions of the piece and gives the chest of drawers that quiet monumentality so characteristic of high-quality Art Deco designs. The subtle interplay of restrained linearity and sculptural framing creates an elegant sense of depth, making the piece appear both rigorously structured and vibrant. The flanking sides thus fulfill not only a structural but also an aesthetic function: they stabilize the overall form, accentuate the vertical lines, and lend the piece an architectural unity of particular nobility.

The piece of furniture demonstrably originated from a notary’s office in southern France. The upper recessed compartment could also have been used as a bar compartment for storing bottles or glasses.
