Large-format lion painting
The large-scale lion painting “Lions in the Steppe” is an oil painting on canvas, signed and dated by the French artist Jean Poulain in 1942. The painting depicts a group of lions living in their natural environment in the steppe and was painted in a realistic style.
Jean Poulain (1901-1967) was a French artist who specialized in animal motifs. He was known for his realistic paintings of animals, particularly of predators such as lions, leopards, and tigers. Poulain also worked as an illustrator and caricaturist, and worked for various magazines and publishers.
Born in Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1884, Jean Poulain discovered art and painting in 1920. From 1912, he traveled through various countries in Africa. After completing his expeditions in 1930, he began his animal painting based on his notes, sketches, and photographs. He passed away in Belgium in 1967.
The painting “Lions in the Steppe” is an example of Poulain’s talent and attention to detail in depicting animals in their natural environment. It is also a contemporary work created during World War II, making it a historical artwork.
