Art Deco Mirror

Exceptional Art Deco Wall Mirror with an Elaborately Carved Wooden Frame – France, circa 1925–1930

This elegant and exceptionally designed Art Deco wall mirror features an elaborately carved wooden frame with rich ornamental decoration. In addition, decorative cords with tassels on either side enhance its distinctive appearance.

The tall rectangular mirror plate, with its bevelled upper corners, is framed at the lower section by an expressive, deeply carved wooden ornament.

The gracefully curved frame features an elaborate drapery motif. Its softly flowing folds create the impression of a gathered fabric curtain.

At the centre of the composition is a sculpturally carved floral rosette. Symmetrically arranged stylised flowers, leaves and geometric ornaments surround this central motif.

The frame elements rising along both sides terminate in striking, geometrically shaped and faceted details.

The darkened recesses of the carving create an attractive contrast with the lighter, metallic-looking surfaces. As a result, they emphasise the sculptural depth and exceptional craftsmanship of the frame.

Between Art Nouveau and Early Art Deco

Particularly appealing is the interplay between the strict geometry of the mirror plate and the softly curved, almost textile-like appearance of the carved wooden frame.

Furthermore, the decorative cords and tassels hanging along both sides lend the mirror additional elegance and highlight its ornamental character.

The design combines elements of late Art Nouveau with the increasingly geometric forms of early Art Deco.

At the same time, the carved drapery motif recalls the ornamental traditions of French Neoclassicism and the Empire style. During the 1920s, these historical influences experienced a renewed interpretation within the decorative arts.

This exceptional French Art Deco mirror is a remarkable example of decorative woodcarving. Its refined ornamentation, unusual design and elegant appearance make it a distinctive piece of French decorative art from the early 20th century.
