Art Deco Bronze

This bronze sculpture of a standing mare from the Art Deco period, created in Germany around 1910, combines the elegance and simplicity of early modernism with the craftsmanship of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The depiction of a horse, in this case a calm and proudly standing mare, conveys power and calm at the same time.

The Art Deco bronze is worked in great detail, which is typical of the time when animal depictions were popular as symbols of grace and closeness to nature. The mare stands on a flat, rectangular bronze base that is kept simple and thus draws the eye to the horse. The base and figure are made of the same material, which underlines the work of art in its unity and harmony. The smooth, geometric base corresponds to the aesthetic ideal of Art Deco, in which clear lines and reduced forms are in the foreground. Although the sculpture was created around 1910, it already takes up the stylistic features of Art Deco, which was to develop into a dominant style after the First World War. Here, flourishing modernity is combined with a timeless representation of nature and animals, in a bronze that impresses with its simplicity and formal elegance.

This bronze is a magnificent deco piece, perhaps for this Art Deco rosewood chest of drawers.
