A Biedermeier mirror originated in Germany between 1815 and 1848 during the Biedermeier period, which was known for its simple elegance and clear lines that represented a departure from the overloaded classical style.

Mirrors during this era were often rectangular or oval and were made of high-quality woods such as mahogany, cherry, or walnut. They were often adorned with decorative elements such as carvings, inlays, or marquetry. The mirror glass surface was typically large and offered a clear, undistorted view.

This small mirror is from the Rhineland around 1820. It is made of beautiful cherry wood veneered on a softwood body. Schinkel gables and ebonized pearwood strips adorn the mirror, with a green-painted gable field featuring an original brass amphora and shellac hand-polishing.

Such mirrors were often used as statement pieces in living and dining areas as well as entryways and bedrooms, adding a touch of elegance and class. They were also popular in dressing rooms and bathrooms, where they were often hung over sinks or dressers.

Today, Biedermeier mirrors are highly sought after by antique dealers and collectors and can be sold at high prices.
